TRADITIONAL / STRUCTURAL and VISCERAL OSTEOPATHY

What is traditional / structural osteopathy?

Osteopathy is a well-established treatment method with a diagnostic, therapeutic and preventive aspect and is applicable for a wide range of medical conditions. Osteopathic treatment is based on the principle that no part of the body exists in isolation and that the primary focus on the musculoskeletal system (the skeleton, muscles, ligaments and connective tissues) is a key component of overall health and wellbeing. Osteopaths work with the concept that optimal body function is only possible on the basis of an optimal musculo-skeletal structure. Thus, the primary objective of the treatment is to restore structural balance.
Structural osteopathy is an effective, supportive treatment for the following conditions:

  1. General aches and pains
  2. Muscle spasms
  3. Arthritic pain
  4. General, acute and chronic back pain
  5. Rheumatic Pain
  6. Cervicogenic headache
  7. Sciatica
  8. Neuralgia
  9. Hip and Knee Pain
  10. Frozen Shoulder
  11. Joint pains
  12. Tennis elbow
  13. Minor Sports injury

What is visceral osteopathy?

As structure osteopathy focuses on the musculo-skeletal, structural aspect of the body, visceral osteopathy focuses on the inner organs. The principal is similar, with diagnostic, therapeutic and preventive aspects. The same philosophy of interconnectedness of all organs and structure applies. Visceral and structural osteopathy are tightly connected. Experienced osteopath see indications of potential inner organ dysfunction on subtle structural musculoskeletal changes, long before the organ itself shows pathology. Here comes the strong preventive aspect of osteopathy at play. With gentle manual palpation and manipulation the osteopath assesses the consistency, flexibility, dynamics, rhythm of the inner organs (liver, kidney, pancreas, spleen, intestine, etc) and is able with mild manual and digital stimulation to activate the organ. It is osteopaths’ all day experience and observation that by correcting structure, they can help improve inner organ function and vice-versa.

Visceral osteopathy is an effective, supportive treatment for the following conditions:

  1. Digestion problems
  2. Cramps
  3. Circulatory Problems
  4. Back Pain
  5. Migraine Prevention
  6. Neuralgia
  7. Tension and Inability to relax

Need to discuss before treatment?

London Neurology & Pain Clinic Fourth Floor, 100 Harley Street, London, W1G 7JA

What is our approach?

Osteopathic diagnosis involves examining muscles and joints using touch, observing posture, range of movements, statics and dynamics of the musculoskeletal system. Osteopathy treatment includes a combination of muscle and connective tissue stretching, manipulation of joint articulations, gentle traction, deep tissue massage, myofascial release, etc.
Similarly, visceral osteopathy feels during the manual diagnostic assessment the firmness, congestion, stagnation or the softness, flexible, freely movable organ and its correlation to neighboring organs.
